La Feria de San Telmo

Every Sunday, the Defensa Street turns into a big, colorful market with thousands of handmade beauties, South American food and tango shows. The Feria de San Telmo has a long tradition in Buenos Aires: The first market to be held was in 1970. Since that day, every week thousands of people from all around the world come to the beautiful district San Telmo to sell artisanry, to buy souvenirs, or simply to admire all the goods on exhibition. However, not all the products being sold are of best quality. So, in this article, we will give you some hints about the best stands and the prettiest places of the market.

Do you know Dulce de Leche? Well, if you don’t, you should definitely try it while staying in Buenos Aires because it is a typical Argentinean dessert which the porteños eat with almost everything that is sweet. And the place where you find the best Dulce de Leche is right here, in the market, at a stand where only artisan products are being sold. We usually go for an Alfajor (two cookies with Dulce de Leche in-between and chocolate on the outside) and one glass of Dulce de Leche. Another beautiful part of the market is the block where mostly art is sold. There is one man who collects all kinds of trash he finds in the river La Plata since about 30 years and makes crazy faces and beautiful tableaus out of it. Others sell impressing photographs or drawings of Buenos Aires. The third place you should visit is a small patio right after crossing the Av. México, where you can rest, eat an asado (the typical Argentinean steak), drink a cold beer and listen to live music. Finally, you get to Plaza Dorrego, the end of the market. Here, you can watch tango shows and folkloric dances, drink coffee or just sit and enjoy the coolness of the beginning night.
